series 1 – disc 1 – episode 2
THE END OF THE WORLD
“They are just so alien, the aliens, are so alien. You look at ’em and they’re alien.”
Don’t worry Rose, I would feel exactly the same after being transported from the normalcy of earth to the year 5,000,000,000 and then being surrouned by all these weird creatures. Not only that, you are there to see the destruction of your home knowing that all the people you loved are long dead and gone…
Adding to that…she gets to meet the “last human” – Cassandra (Is this really how humans will end up if we continue on this crazy obsession for so-called ‘perfection’?) – the ‘bitchy trampoline’ hell bent on killing all those on board the station and reaping the financial benefits.
It’s no wonder she is questioning her decision about joining this stranger, The Doctor.
“I just sort of hitched a ride with this man, I didn’t even think about it. I don’t even know who he is. He’s a complete stranger.”
The Doctor is very cheery and enthusiastic about the whole spectacle of Rose seeing all of this, almost to the point of showing off. Yet, I think this is also a disguise when we later see how sad and guilt ridden he is at the loss of this own planet and people.
Thanksfully the tension between Rose and The Doctor is helped by alittle jiggery-pockery so Rose can call her Mum (very impressive!!).
The blue-faced Crespallion steward and his conversation with the beep-bop-beep computer reminded me alot of R2D2/C3PO – was this an intentional shout-out?
Oh…and why put a shield restoration panel at the end of dangerous bridge covered by deadly fast spinng fan blades? Lol.
I liked this bonding moment for her and the Doctor as he finally opens up to her that he too witnessed the destruction of this planet . “You’ve got me” she consoles him. Hand in hand they go off for chips (and more adventures).
SIDE NOTE: Did anyone else hear the Moxx of Balhoon talking to The face of Boe about Bad Wolf? (“Indupadibly, this is the bad wolf scenario”) or am I hearing things?
This episode was a great starting point into Rose’s time/space travels and Cassandra getting the jukebox confused with the iPod and calling Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ a traditional ballad was hilarious (not to mention Jabe asking The Doctor if Rose was his umm…prostitute lol)
